Credit Bureau Letters to Remove Inaccurate Information

When you see inaccurate information on your credit bureau report, the first step is to contact them directly to request removal of that wrong information.

Remember, the credit bureaus do not like to remove information because they are in the business of selling that information to creditors.

They reportedly receive approximately 10,000 letters per day, so the more information and proof you provide in a strongly worded letter, the more likely it will get attention.

You should include any copies of proof you may have, such as canceled checks showing payments, paid off accounts, loans, or anything else that will show the information is indeed wrong.

You may also want to tell them the consequences that have resulted from this wrongful information they are reporting, since the credit agencies tend to give the most immediate attention to seriously wronged consumers.

Here are examples of letters you can send to the credit bureaus to request they take this information off your credit report.

Credit Bureau Name:

Your Name

SSN XXX-XX-XXXX

Your Address

(Current address for last 4 years)

DOB: 1/1/00

I've just reviewed my credit report and have noticed there are several inaccurate items on my report:

Chase VISA Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx:This account is listed as being 30 days late. I have never been late on this account.

Macy's Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx:This account is listed as being 30 days late. I have never been late on this account.

Amex Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx:This account is listed as being 30 days late. I have never been late on this account.

In addition, there are a number of credit accounts which have been inactive for more than 7 years. As you know, the Federal Credit Reporting Act states that all credit older than 7 years should be removed from my report. The following accounts should be removed:

Diner's Club Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx:

GE Consumer Card Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx:

Sears Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx:

I have enclosed a copy of my driver's license as proof of my identity.

Sincerely,

Your Name
